Students completing a placement at LUOSKO can expect to:
Develop practical animal-care skills, including feeding, cleaning, grooming, and basic health monitoring of rescue dogs.
Gain experience in canine behaviour and training, observing rehabilitation work and understanding how to build trust and confidence in nervous or previously mistreated dogs.
Apply academic knowledge from animal management, veterinary, or welfare studies in a real-life rescue environment.
Understand welfare legislation and rescue operations including intake procedures, rehoming processes, and health & safety protocols.
Improve communication and teamwork skills by working alongside professional handlers, volunteers, and members of the public.
Learn about community engagement and education, supporting LUOSKO’s outreach work and awareness campaigns.
Build employability and confidence, developing responsibility, time management, and problem-solving in a hands-on setting.​



Roles and Activities
​
Students might take part in:
Kennel care and maintenance – feeding, cleaning, disinfecting kennels, and maintaining welfare standards.
Dog walking and socialisation – exercising dogs safely, helping with behavioural enrichment and play sessions.
Training and observation – assisting staff during obedience or behavioural sessions and recording progress notes.
Health checks and grooming – basic care under supervision, such as brushing, bathing, and monitoring body condition.
Rehoming support – helping with home checks, meeting potential adopters, and preparing adoption packs.
Fundraising and events – supporting charity events, merchandise sales, or public awareness stalls.
Education and outreach – helping deliver talks or presentations to schools and community groups about responsible dog ownership.
Administrative tasks – assisting with data entry, record keeping, and social-media updates related to the rescue’s operations.
